Vales Point Battery Energy Storage System
Delta Electricity in partnership with Samsung C&T is exploring a large-scale battery energy storage system at the Vales Point Power Station site which could strengthen NSW’s electricity supply reliability and support the renewable energy transition.
Project overview
The proposed project, once complete, will provide essential energy storage capacity to help keep NSW’s electricity network stable and reliable as more renewable energy, including solar and wind, is added to the network.
The project would involve the installation, operation, maintenance and decommissioning/re-powering of a battery energy storage system, supported by ancillary infrastructure.
Different options for battery storage and discharge capacity and operating life duration will be investigated during the project’s planning stage to identify a preferred option for development and detailed design.
Delta Electricity is developing the project in partnership with global technology company Samsung C&T. Samsung C&T is undertaking the development of renewable energy and battery projects to provide alternative, sustainable energy sources for communities across Australia.
Project site
The project is proposed to be located at Vales Point Power Station in the footprint of the former A Station for which demolition work was completed in 2014.
The Vales Point site is uniquely positioned to play a significant role in NSW energy’s transition, beyond the operation of its current coal-fired units. The site enjoys a long history of electricity generation and is adjacent to Transgrid's existing transmission infrastructure, making it well-suited to support the transition from coal to renewable energy storage.

Project benefits
Large-scale battery energy storage systems:
- Enhance energy security by responding quickly to network fluctuations, reducing blackout risks.
- Support renewables integration and provide network stability by storing excess electricity from the grid during periods of over-supply and providing additional energy when needed.
- Benefit local and regional economies through creating construction jobs and operating and maintenance roles, as well as opportunities for local suppliers.
Project status
The project is currently in the feasibility and preliminary assessment stage:
Scoping and Preliminary Assessment (Current Stage):
- Prepare Scoping Report and Request for Secretary’s Environmental Assessment Requirements (SEARs) from NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure.
State Significant Development Application (Next Stage):
- Conduct technical and environmental investigations
- Consult community and stakeholders and seek feedback
- Prepare and lodge State Significant Development Application.
A final decision to proceed is expected to be made by Delta Electricity and Samsung C&T in early 2026, pending completion of the investigations. Construction is subject to the final decision and environmental planning approval.

Community engagement
We will engage with the community and stakeholders as the project develops and there will be opportunities for the community to provide feedback later this year as the project planning and assessment activities progress.
