Past Developments

A number of innovative and sustainable projects have been developed by Delta Electricity in past years.  These development sites have been sold by the NSW Government to the private sector under the NSW Energy Reform Program.

Bamarang

Delta Electricity was granted Project Approval for Stage 1 of the project (two open cycle 300MW gas turbines and associated infrastructure) on 27 January 2007.   Project approval for Stage 2, comprising the conversion of Stage 1 into a combined cycle facility of approximately 400MW, was granted on 29 October 2008. The proposed plant is based on dry cooling technology, thereby requiring low water use.
In addition, a gas pipeline licence (Pipeline Licence No: 36) was granted on 14 August 2008 to supply natural gas to the facility from the gas main.

A further Modification to the Project Approval was granted on 30 September 2010, to increase the approved plant capacity from "approximately 400MW" to "approximately 450MW".  This will enable all available E class plant designs in combined cycle mode to be utilised.

The Bamarang generation development site has now been acquired by Infratil under the NSW Energy Reform process.

Further information on the project application and approvals please visit Planning NSW Bamarang Project.

Cobbora Mine joint venture

Delta Electricity in conjunction with Macquarie Generation and Eraring Energy formed a joint venture to develop the Cobbora coal resource.

A Part 3A project application was submitted to Planning NSW for an open cut coal mine at Cobbora in western NSW, about 22km south west of Dunedoo. The project application covered 288 square kilometres and it is proposed to mine 30 million tonnes per annum run-of-mine coal. The majority of coal produced would be used in the State's power stations to generate electricity.

Cobbora Mine will now be managed by the NSW government as part of the NSW Energy Reform process and Delta Electricity will no longer be involved in the development of this mine.

For further information on the project application please visit Planning NSW Cobbora Mine Project.

Marulan

On 26 October 2009, approval was granted to Delta Electricity to build a gas turbine plant on a site near the Marulan high voltage switchyard near Brayton. EnergyAustralia was also been granted approval to build a gas turbine facility on an adjacent site. The NSW Government’s Energy Reform Strategy identified the Marulan sites as two of seven NSW energy infrastructure development sites to be made available for sale to the private sector which will then seek any further approvals and construct the facilities. The Delta Electricity Marulan site was transacted by the NSW government and purchased by TRUenergy in December 2010.

Mt Piper Extension

On 3 March 2010, the Minister for Planning granted concept approval for the installation and operation of up to 2,000 MW of new generating capacity fuelled by either gas or coal on the existing Mt Piper Power Station site. The proposal provides for the installation of carbon capture and storage technology when it becomes commercially available.

The Mt Piper Extension project was one of the seven power station development sites identified by the NSW Government for sale under its Energy Reform process and was acquired by TRUenergy in December 2010.
