Bamarang

The NSW Government’s Energy Reform Strategy identified the Bamarang site as one of seven NSW energy infrastructure development sites to be made available for sale. In accordance with this, Delta aims to complete consent modifications and a water supply option agreement in 2009/10.

Approvals

Project Approval for Stage 1 of the project, two open cycle gas turbines and associated infrastructure with a power generating capacity of approximately 300MW, was granted on 27 January 2007.  Project approval for Stage 2, comprising the conversion of Stage 1 into a combined cycle facility of approximately 400MW, was granted on 29 October 2008. Delta was granted a gas pipeline licence (Pipeline Licence No: 36) including acquisition of easements for connection, on 14 August 2008 to supply natural gas to the facility from the gas main.

The approval for Stage 1 includes construction and operation of a 132kV transmission line connecting the Bamarang Gas Turbine Facility to the existing Integral Energy grid at West Nowra.  To achieve a more secure grid connection,  engineering and environmental studies are proceeding to support an application to construct a  330kV transmission line.  This would connect the Bamarang facility to the Transgrid Kangaroo Valley-Canberra 330kV transmission line.

Department of Planning approval for this 330kV proposal,  as a Modification to the existing Concept and Project Approvals,  is currently being sought.

A further Modification to the Project Approval is being sought from the Department of Planning to increase the approved plant capacity from "approximately 400MW" to "approximately 450MW".  This will enable all available E class plant designs in combined cycle mode to be utilised.

Low water use

The proposed plant is based on dry cooling technology, thereby limiting the water requirement. An option agreement with Shoalhaven Water for supply of water over the life of the power station is being established.
