Here are a series of fact sheets about the discovery of electricity, how electricity is generated from coal, the generation process and the history of electricity in NSW.
Discovery of electricity
For centuries electricity has been a challenge to scientists. They have long known that it exists, and have discovered how to generate it on a large scale but find it difficult to explain what electricity is.
Generating electricity from coal
Coal made it possible to produce iron and steel, power the steam engines of the industrial revolution and today provides the steam from which electrical energy is generated.
The electricity generation process
Electricity is a vibrant, imaginative energy source and a necessary part of today’s modern living. In Australia, most electricity is produced by coal-fired power stations. Other fuel sources for electricity generation include gas, water, solar energy and wind.
Electricity in NSW to 1950
The early history of electricity in New South Wales is closely allied to the history of Sydney itself.
