Cooperative Research Centre for Coal in Sustainable Development (CCSD)

Research Supporting Cleaner Coal Use

The CCSD brings together the majority of Australia’s coal research skill base as well as experts in sustainability.  CCSD researchers are recognised internationally as being at the forefront of coal research in the international science community.

CCSD’s research is underpinned by a focus on the three dimensions of sustainability - economic, social and environmental.  Research is conducted in several research programs to deliver outcomes that:

inform strategic decisions

improve environmental performance

understand coal performance in technology

The CCSD seeks to diminish the environmental impact of coal-fired power stations while ensuring electricity generation remains a viable and reliable industry.

The CRC is conducting research into co-firing renewable biomass fuel with coal to reduce greenhouse emissions from coal fired power stations.

Delta supports research in key areas through its involvment in research programs such as the "Future Scenarios and Technology" research program.

Future Scenarios and Technology

This program is the innovative hub for the CCSD and provides research to:

evaluate emerging technologies

to identify long term technology solutions and develop pathways for risk mitigation

develop industry scenarios for the Australian context including ‘roadmaps’ for new clean coal technologies

Delta has direct involvment in this research program through its participation in
"Project 4.1- Portfolio Options And Risk Assessment"

Portfolio Options And Risk Assessment

This project is assessing possible future mixes of technologies for the national generation portfolio to reduce exposure to carbon emissions.  It uses scenario and real options analysis to investigate technology options in an uncertain environment.

Mr Peter Coombes is the project leader for the team.   The following reports are available at the CCSE Web site www.ccsd.biz
