Baseload renewable energy is now produced at the Condong sugar mill and marketed as Sunshine Electricity through a joint venture between Delta Electricity and the NSW Sugar Milling Co-operative.
The Condong co-generation plant consists of a single 150 t/h boiler, a single steam driven 30MW turbo alternator and auxiliary plant systems (such as water treatment, ash handling, fuel handling and on-line storage) to support the main plant operation.
Plant cooling is by evaporative cooling towers. The plant provides steam, extracted from the turbine, to the mill for heating and motive power. Primary condensate is returned to the co-generation plant.
A fuel stockpile area has been developed to store surplus cane-based fuel and other fuels. This area comprises approximately 6ha of hardstand with a perimeter earth wall to keep floodwaters from the fuel. A transfer conveyor between the cogeneration plant and the stockpile area is included.
