Delta Electricity is a leader in the generation of electricity in Australia.
Delta Electricity is the largest electricity generator in the National Electricity Market with an installed capacity of over 5,000 megawatts. We produce electricity from coal, gas, water and biomass. Formed in 1996, our generators produce around 12% of the electricity needed by consumers in the National Electricity Market, comprising all states and territories except WA and NT.
Most of Delta’s generation occurs at five power stations located in NSW. These are Mt Piper and Wallerawang near Lithgow, and Colongra, Vales Point and Munmorah on the Central Coast. The 667 MW low emission gas turbine power station at Colongra was opened in December 2009 and provides power at times of peak demand - such as very hot summer days and cold winter nights.
Development approval has been granted to build a gas turbine power station at Bamarang near Nowra, and at Marulan near Goulbourn. However, these are three of seven sites that have been earmarked for sale and development by the private sector under the NSW Government's Energy Reform process. The opening of the data room for the sale of these sites is proposed for July 1 2010.
Delta is trialling the use of biomass in its Wallerawang power station, co-firing it with coal and thus replacing a proportion of coal with a renewable fuel. Delta has also sponsored a mallee planting trial with over 200,000 mallee seedlings planted in the Forbes district.
Delta Electricity operates under the Energy Services Corporations Act (1995) and the State Owned Corporations Act (1989). As a Government Trading Enterprise, Delta prepares a Statement of Corporate Intent each year.
